MISE-EN-SCENE

Props - Items characters use or pick up in the scene. In our film we will use suit cases, newspaper, keys and a pair of glasses.
Image result for old suit case
Location - A place where the scene is set. We want to set our short film in several locations. some of these include Ottery St Mary Church. We will use the graveyard in the church. this is to create a horror feel and suspense. A  graveyard connotes death.
Image result for gtaveyard

We also want to use the butchers. This is to take pictures of pigs hanging up. This connotes eating and slaughter.

We want to use empty streets at night, the dark empty streets connote loneliness and vulnerability. Which is what the girl in the film represents.

We are also going to use a house. This will be her house in the film. As she walks up to her house the  lights will be on and the house will look homely. The lights will then turn off once she is inside, this is representing danger, which she is in at this point.

Characters - We will use two main characters and some other extras which will hardly be seen. The two main characters are Issei and a German girl. Issei is a skinny pale man who is quiet, strange and mysterious. The German girl is beautiful and slim with dark hair.

Shots - We will use several shots during our film, some of these include long shots of the scenery, close ups and extreme close ups of the newspaper and the German girl. Slow mo shots of the suitcases rolling down the bank towards the river and the camera panning through the graveyard. (All shots are shown on our story board and timeline)

Costumes - Clothes the character is wearing. The German girl will wear a dress, coat, scarf and heels. She is wearing heels so we can hear the along the path.

Issei will be wearing all black, a black turtle neck, black trousers a black coat, black shoes and large black glasses.

Sounds - We want to start our film off in a graveyard. Whilst the camera is panning through the graveyard we want a scary soundtrack playing in the background, this will make the atmosphere spooky. At the end of the film, we want scream and gunshot sounds. This is to show that she has been shot and is in pain without showing that happening. We also want there to be exaggerated sounds of her shoes along the oath as she walks. That will make the scene more scary and mysterious.

Low Key Lighting - a dimly lit scene with lots of shadow

High Key Lighting - a bright and well lit scene with very few shadows

Expressions - the ways the characters face looks and the way they hold their body. For example this could be in a confident way

The highlighted terms are terms that we will use in our own film.

What is our idea?

Our idea is based on a true story about Issei Sagawa. Issei is a man who follows women back to their homes. Kills them then eats them. He then dumps the left over bodies in rivers. The film will be a thriller. there will be enigmas, suspense, low key lighting and eerie music.

Animatic

We created an animatic to help us with our filming. We took pictures of each section of our mood board. Then we put them in to Premiere Pro with the soundtrack we decided to use in our film opening. We also timed each picture to come up at a specific time to match when each shot changes.

Preliminary Task
Our preliminary task is to create a short two minute film using the shot reverse shot technique, the 180 degree rule and some speech. We are doing this in pairs. Our idea was to use lots of different camera angles to make the start of the film more exciting.
Sion Roe Premiere Pro lesson

Inline image 1This was helpful for me as I will be doing some of the editing for our main task. This will include putting a title in and other text throughout the film.

Time Line and Story Board

This is a timeline that myself and Jack have created for our main task. On the timeline, we have written our idea and what each shot will consist of. A timeline helps us to understand where the titles should come in and what order they should appear in. I find that it makes them easier to read and makes planning a lot clearer.

Our story board shows us how many shots we have and what order they go in, they also show us exactly what happens in each shot. This makes the film opening easier to film as it is clear and understandable.

Student film Evaluation - The Missing

Camera Angles
I liked how the camera angles changed from steady to shaky when the circumstance changed. This meant you could tell who had been kidnapped. The angles let us see who the main characters are and what their role is in the film.

Editing
The editing is past paced, this is representing rush and desperation. The editing is very good as the whole film is smooth and seamless.

Sound
There is no speaking, there is just a song playing in the background, this is called non diegetic sound.

Mise-en-scene
The clothing the two characters are wearing are very different rom each other. The investigator Is wearing smart black clothes, this show he is authority. The person who has been kidnaped is wearing old dirty clothes this shows that he is lower down.

My role

For our final film, we have had to decide between our group members what roles we are going to take on. Although we will all help with everything, we have decided specific roles that we will concentrate on.
I am doing the filming, and a bit of sound and lighting. For this role I will have to make sure that the sound quality is good and all the sound is regular I also have to make sure that the lighting is well lit and right for our genre, which is horror. I will have to make sure that it is lit as low lighting. For filming,  I will have to make sure that the film runs smooth and that each shot runs into each other seamlessly. I have to make sure that the shots are steady or hand held when appropriate. This will help us reach a higher grade.
Task

Our task is to create the opening sequence for a fictional film that is two minutes long.
For this task we have until February for the whole film to be filmed and edited. In this timeframe we also have time to plan our film, which is very important if we want out film to look professional. The equipment we will be using is a filming camera, a tripod, lighting and a microphone.
Our film is worth sixty per cent of our final mark. 60 marks are for construction, 20 are for research and planning and a further 20 are for the evaluation.

Analysis of the opening scene of Blade

The opening seems to start off normally as there are two people sitting in a car. Once they get into the building with the body's in plastic bags, it gets strange. You know something strange is going to happen because how some of the characters are dresses. Once they are inside and at the party the character is dancing around when he feels something drip onto his head. He tastes and smells it to only realise it is blood. By the time he looks up it is to late, and the bloodbath has began. It shows us a sign saying blood bath, and we now know why it is called that.

Preliminary Task

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCyRGX_33nM

This is Jacques Khaliq and I's First Media task. We shot a two minute clip about a torture scene. We included shot reverse shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule. We broke the 180 degree rule in our task, recognizing this will prevent it happening in our main task.  I think our film wasn't very good. This is because the film was out of focus, the sound was not very regular and the lighting wasn't very good, because it was too dark. I think that our story line was good and exciting. To improve the filming, we could of made sure that all the footage was in focus by watching each shot back on the camera after we had shot it. To improve on the sound we should of made sure everyone was quite and if there was background sound, edit it out. We should of also used our microphone sounds as it would of been louder and the sound in each shot would of been more similar. To improve The lightning we could have used actually lighting instead of using a torch. we could of also filmed it when it was lighter. This would of helped with the camera being in focus. Our actors were also not the best as they were a rushed choice. We should of planned our task and thought about it more before filming it. Overall our film was awful.

Match of Action

Match of Action is a film editing technique where the editor cuts from one shot to another shot to view another view that matches the first shot's action. An example used a lot is a character walking through a door and reaching for the door knob.

Composition
Composition in media contains:

Golden rectangle:
The Golden Ratio is a term used to describe aesthetically pleasing proportioning within a piece of work or an image. The centre of the spiral fits the most important, eye catching part of the image.

The rule of odds:
The rule of odds states that having an odd number of objects in an image will be more interesting and therefore pleasing to the eye and to look at.

Image result for rule of odds in photographyIn case there is an even number of objects, your brain would have an easier time organizing and looking at the objects.

The objects in pairs are therefore bringing in symmetry and dullness.

If you have one main object, accompany it with two supporting objects, not one. This way, one of them will be a middle one.

Image result for leading lines photographyLeading lines:
The use of lines can be used to direct the viewers attention to the subject of your photograph. These lines can be straight, diagonal, wavy, or any other creative variation.

They may also lead away from the photography subject.

Image result for strong diganonal photographyStrong diagonal:
Out of all the lines used in photography, diagonals are the most dynamic.

You can use them to create a strong impression of movement or you can use them to create a tremendous sense of depth.

All images are created with lines, some vertical, horizontal and others converging but knowing how to place them affects the mood and composition of the final image.

Image result for point of view photographyPoint of view:
Point of view in photography means the position from which the camera sees the scene. Are you looking down on the subject? Are you looking up at the subject? How close are you to the subject? Is there anything between you and the subject? Every decision you make about point of view will change how your viewer sees the photo.
Image result for framing photography

Framing:
Framing is when the background an image is broken up by a frame within the image. This could be and image of scenery taken from inside through a window, broken up by a window frame.

Image result for filling the frame photography

Filling the frame:Filling the frame in is when the image you have taken takes up the whole frame. Photographers get in very close to whatever they are taking. They do this to make a significant portion of the photograph the final photograph.

Active space:
Active space is when the photographer gives space for the subject to move into a space. Some people call the space in front of the subject Active space and some call the space behind the subject dead space.

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs.

The guideline suggests that an image should be divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that the important elements should be placed along these lines or where they cross.

Finders of the technique claim that putting the subject in line with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the important parts of the photo.

Learning about The Rule of Thirds will help the composition of my shots as well as filming my shots.

Camera Angles

Extreme Close-Up - This shot is very close up to the face. It shows the characters facial expressions. This shot is very intense and personal.

Close-Up - This shot is of the face. It allows us to also see facial expressions. It gives us the identity of the character. It is used in a lot of romantic films.

Medium Close-Up - This shot is of the face and shoulders. It allows us to see what they are wearing and the background. This shot establishes the character.

Mid-Shot - The mid shot is the top half of the character. It lets us see what they are wearing and the outline of them. It also lets us see if they are holding props and if so what the props are.

Medium long shot - A Medium Long Shot is of hole body. It shows you more of what the character is wearing and more of the background. It also shows their posture.

Long Shot or Wide Shot - This shot is far away from the character. It lets the the audience see all of the character from head to toe. This shot also lets you see the surroundings that the character is in.

High Angle-Shot - This shot is a very intimidating and makes the character look vulnerable. It is a birds eye  shot looking down on the character. The shot makes the character look small.

Low Angle-Shot - This shot makes the character look bigger. It makes the character look powerful. It is taken from below the character.

2-Shot - This is contains to characters. It is a shot usually to introduce another character and the relationship going on between them.

3-Shot - This shot enables us to see all 3 characters. It introduces another character and can show a group conversation.

Over the shoulder-shot - This shot is usually used in conversation between two or three people. It allows you to see both characters whilst one is speaking. The character you can properly see is usually the one speaking at that point.

The research I have carried out on camera angles will help me when I am constructing my practical work.

I will use some of these camera angles in my work when constructing storyboards.

Poster Deconstruction

Deconstructing this poster will help me understand that the film needs every little detail to make sure that it is a good as it can be.

Image result for 180 degree rule

The 180 degree rule

The 180 degree rule is a cinematography guideline. The basic guideline regarding on-screen spatial relationship between two characters or objects. The guideline states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left or right relationship to each other. There is a invisible line, if the camera crosses it, it is called 'crossing the line'. The invisible line stops the camera from crossing the axis, if it does, it is no longer the 180 degree rule. This is known as crossing the line or jumping the line.

The image shows the axis between the two characters. The 180 degree green arc is where the camera can be placed. if the camera moves over to the red arc, it is no longer the 180 degree rule. If cutting from the green arc to the red arc the characters need to switch places on the screen from left to right or right to left, otherwise it is no longer the 180 degree rule.

If the line is crossed it becomes very similar to shot reverse shot, which is another camera technique.

Shot Reverse Shot
Shot Reverse Shot is a camera technique used in several films. It is a technique that shows two to three characters having a conversation. It is called Shot Reverse Shot because the cameras are placed over the shoulder of each character. Shot Reverse Shot is where a character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

This is a list of my top 5 favourite films and TV series.

1. Harry Potter
My favourite film out of all of the Harry Potter films has to be the third one, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Although it was a very difficult decision to make. I like the Harry Potter films, specifically The Prisoner of Azkaban because I have grown up with watching them and reading the books. They appeal to me because I love the action, mystery and storylines the films have to them. I like how you watch the three main characters Harry, Hermione and Ron grow up throughout the films. I would never get bored of watching Harry Potter films, especially this one.

2. Stranger Things
Stranger Things is a TV series on Netflix. The series is full of mystery
and that is why I enjoy it. Each episode is very different and exciting. I loved this series because it was very addictive and hard to not keep watching episodes. Most of the actors are children, and they are very good at the roles they play. The series also includes a monster like creature which makes it very engaging and interesting. I am very excited for the next series to come out next year.

3. Orphan Black
Orphan Black is also a TV series on Netflix. This is one of my favourite shows because the main character Tatiana Maslany, plays most of the characters but is dressed differently to resemble each clone. The series is about a corporation that makes clones. There is several clones in the series and after a seasons ends a new clone usually is in the next season. It is very dark and mysterious. It is also very addictive and engaging.  I would highly recommend this series to anyone.

  4. The Great British Bake Off

This Is a TV series that is produced by the BBC. It has been on TV for a long time and gets millions of views each week when a new episode comes out on a Wednesday. It is about a group of bakers who each week have a new task. The task changes each week and can vary from cakes to biscuits to bread. each week one baker is awarded star baker and one is sent home. Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are the judges and Mel and Sue are the hosts. I love this as it is something you can watch with the whole family. It is such a great show and is very funny.
5. Storage Hunters
Storage Hunters is an America reality show that has been
enhanced for your entertainment. It is based all over America. I like storage hunters because it is funny and good to watch. I enjoy watching it with my dad because we both find it funny. There are many people in the show bidding for things in the storage bins. It is interesting to watch because they can get great things such as cars. They can also get rubbish such as trash.

AS Media Blog

Welcome to my AS media blog.

I am taking media because I enjoy watching TV and films. Particularly the Harry Potter films. My Favourite film is either the first film, The Philosophers Stone. Or the third film, The Prisoner of Azkaban. I love these films, because I have grown up with them. I also like the mystery and action in them.

For my other two A-levels I have taken Photography and Art textiles. I also really enjoy these subjects. I think they all go well together and compliment each other. Outside of school I enjoy music and my dog

This will help me in the future because Media is relevant as it is all around us, and everyone is involved with it and using it in their day to day lives. I am hoping to have a future with film and media as I  thoroughly enjoy it and am very interested in it. I enjoy sleeping my dog and I dislike spiders and the dark.

. I am hoping to do well in this course and get a good grade because I enjoy it and want to carry on with it in my future. I would like to go to university and do a course on something like film or media.
